Beginners and Learn to Row courses

"Rowing for all" is our mission statement. The club welcomes beginners (and re-starters) of all ages.

If you are a complete beginner, the most appropriate (and effective) introduction to rowing is via one of our Learn to Row programmes (see below). Email via this link to register your interest: we'd love to hear from you.

If you have already grasped the basic rowing skills and technique, or are returning to the sport after a sabbatical, it is likely best to contact the relevant squad co-ordinators directly. They will discuss with you the optimum strategy for getting things going.

Learn to Row courses

In order to introduce new people to the sport of rowing and provide a structured pathway into the club's novice section, St Andrew BC offers periodic Learn to Row courses.

The aim is to offer a program of regular courses so, even if you miss out on the latest course, please get in touch and we'll let you know when the next available course will start.

Next Learn to Row course

We are delighted to announce that the details for the next Learn to Row course have been finalised. The program will commence on Saturday 18th August 2012, meeting at the boat house at 7.45am. Sessions will be held on a Saturday morning at 7.45am and Sunday afternoon at 4pm.

The course will include 9 sessions of tuition led by two experienced coaches and supported by a minimum of 1 cox. Each session will last for approximately 1.5-2 hours. The first session will be a land-based technical lesson to introduce basic technique, followed by 8 water-based sessions.

The program has been written by a qualified sports psychologist and experienced rowing coach to develop individuals with no experience to have confidence in the boat. It is run in-line with Scottish Rowing’s Explore Rowing program and participants will receive a certificate on successful completion. For those keen to pursue the sport once the course is complete, there will be progression into the novice, then senior squads; and the course is time-tabled so it finishes during the regatta season when there will be opportunities for a chance to compete.

The course is designed for small numbers so that people can be given tailored tuition: it offers excellent value at £120. This gives the participants full access to the club’s equipment, access to the gym and circuits class, membership for the duration of the program (and for 1 month after completion to allow you to continue your rowing career), a breakfast after the final session and, of course, a tailor-made Learn to Row program delivered by experts.
