St Andrew BC Learn to Row course

After a successful pilot programme, the club has finalised details of its next Learn to Row course.  It will start on Saturday 14 April 2012, meeting at the boathouse at 0745, and offer beginners a comprehensive introduction to the sport and a pathway into competition. Full details are available from the Learn to Row co-ordinator and on the dedicated web page.

How to handle training volume, Part 1

Without question, volume is an important aspect of aerobic development and training for a sport that requires significant endurance. Volume is necessary not only to build an endurance base for racing, but also to build a broader base for higher levels of training. The more aerobically fit the athlete is, the more the athlete can handle in a workout.

Glasgow Western Eights Head

The first of this year's eights heads is scheduled for the Clyde on Saturday 28 January. The draw is available here. St Andrew is represented in Women's R2, Men's Open, and Men's Veteran.

 

UPDATE: Our women braved zero degrees without thermals and had a good row down the Clyde in excellent conditions. Our guys won Div 1 outright (and their Vet event) and came 2nd in Div2 to a strong Glasgow composite.

Scottish Indoor Rowing Championships

This year's indoor rowing championships will be held at Heriot Watt University on Sunday 29 January. The draw is available here. St Andrew has various representations with a majority of juniors participating.

Eric Murray breaks world 1 hour erg record

Check out this video of Eric Murray, bowman of the Kiwi 2-, breaking the world hour record on a stationery erg. He achieved an astonishing average 500m split time of 1:36 and sustained his heart rate over 190bpm for 50 minutes, peaking at 201bpm.  Seriously tough.  Not only that but he went on to beat Mahe Drysdale in an epic last minute push gaining nearly two lengths in the final 100m (also on video here)

Drew Ginn's perceptions of 2k and 6k tests

Three-time Olympic gold medallist Drew Ginn is a physical and technical inspiration. He has his own blogs at Rudderfish in which he describes his motivations and feelings about recent 2k erg test and 6k erg test.
